The Horseshoes, Blunham

The Challenge

Roy and Liz Brown have run The Horseshoes in Blunham, Bedford since 2012, becoming a fixture of the village long before Red Oak Taverns took over the pub’s freehold in March 2021 — in the middle of the Covid-19 lockdowns. It was an uncertain moment to start a new landlord relationship. As Liz recalls,

“We were really concerned that we were entering a national lockdown with new pub owners. We just didn’t know what to expect or whether we would receive any support.”

The Solution

“Our concerns were soon eradicated when we realised that Red Oak Taverns were very different to what we had experienced before,”

Liz says.

“They were very responsive, providing ongoing support and advice throughout the pandemic, and once restrictions eased, the company set about investing in our pub.”

The transformation was substantial: two small bars combined into one open-plan space, new décor and flooring throughout, fixed seating and high bar stools to accommodate more customers, and a brighter, fresher, premium feel. Outside, Red Oak built a large pergola with festoon lighting and extra seating, and renovated the garden, including the children’s play area.

Still Going Strong

Five years on, sales at The Horseshoes have more than doubled since the investment, and the pub continues to develop new offers for its regulars.

Roy and Liz have now signed a second lease with Red Oak Taverns, extending their partnership for a further 3 years, a vote of confidence on both sides, and proof that The Horseshoes remains exactly what it’s always been: the heart of the village and its community, for years to come.
